FAQ’s

Is it cheaper to make vegan yogurt at home?
My line fermenter currently produces yogurt for 38% cheaper than the cost in shops. While the Traditional way of making yogurt has largely been consigned to history, it seems likely that this would give a similar result.

What are the setting up and running costs?
Equipment costs are zero (Traditional) to variable (Line Fermentation). To avoid disappointment start with the ‘Traditional’ method and work up to the Line Fermenter (if that is what you want). Running costs are also low (typically £1.50 per litre for organic soya milk).

How much time  does it take to make vegan yogurt at home?
Once you get into a routine, expect to spend around 5 mins (Line Fermentation) to half an hour (Traditional) of active involvement for each batch.

What is the maintenance routine for a Line Fermenter?
There is very little maintenance required; there is only one moving part (the spigot lever) so maintenance comes down to keeping a watch on the tube for any coloured spot, also at either end of the tube/gallery:

For the top end where the funnel goes for re-filling, use a strip of kitchen roll wrapped round some
dowelling or similar to clear dried milk that gets caked on; perhaps keep a look out every week.

For the lower end, after harvesting give the spigot-end a wash with hot water in a
thimble or similar to clear any curd.
